About Us

Our Story

Kennington Upholstery was founded by Muthana Al-Ali, a master upholsterer who trained in the traditional craft before establishing his own workshop in Central London. What began as a one-man operation focused on furniture repair has grown into one of London's most trusted upholstery businesses, now offering both expert reupholstery services and a full range of bespoke made-to-order furniture.

Our workshop is on Tottenham Court Road — London's historic furniture district. The location is no accident. We are part of a tradition of furniture making that has defined this area for over two centuries, and we take that heritage seriously. Every piece that leaves our workshop is built or restored to the highest standard, using techniques that have been refined over generations.

We specialise in marrying traditional craft with contemporary design. While our methods are rooted in hand-tied springs, horsehair stuffing, and hardwood joinery, the furniture we produce is thoroughly modern. Our clients include homeowners looking for the perfect sofa, interior designers furnishing high-end residential projects, restaurants and hotels outfitting their spaces, and collectors restoring treasured antique pieces.

Over the years, we have built a reputation for quality that speaks for itself: 304 five-star reviews on Google, with not a single rating below five stars. We earn that trust on every job, whether it is a £500 armchair re-cover or a £15,000 bespoke corner unit.

What We Do

We offer two core services: restoring furniture you already love, and building new furniture designed exactly to your specifications. Both are done in-house, by the same team, to the same standard.

The Workshop

Everything we build and restore is done in our workshop on Tottenham Court Road, WC1E 6HP. Clients are welcome to visit by appointment to see work in progress, discuss projects in person, and browse fabric samples from our library of over 12,000 swatches.

We work with fabrics from leading suppliers including Warwick, Cristina Marrone, and Designers Guild. Velvets, linens, performance fabrics, bouclé, faux suede, and genuine leathers — all available to browse on our website or as physical swatches delivered to your door.

Our Approach

Materials matter. We use kiln-dried hardwood frames, steel serpentine springs or traditional hand-tied eight-way springs, high-resilience foam with Dacron wrapping, and fire-safety compliant interliners on every piece. Cheap shortcuts that look fine on delivery but fail within a year are not part of our process.

Craft takes time. A typical bespoke sofa takes six to eight weeks from order to delivery. That time is not padding — it is the actual time required to cut, sew, build, upholster, and inspect a piece of furniture that will last decades. We do not rush, and we do not cut corners.

Transparency is non-negotiable. Prices are on the website. Quotes are free. There are no hidden charges, no pressure sales, and no surprises at delivery. We believe the work speaks for itself.
